AND, students in the Vermillion High School theater department have been selected to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2019.
AND, Vermillion has a dance organization for children. I didn't know about this before today. It's called VADO (Vermillion Area Dance Organization) and it must be huge, because an upcoming recital will have "more than 200 children from 40 classes" performing, according to the local paper.
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who replied on this thread - I'm contemplating a move to Vermillion from Vermont next year and have 3 kids and this thread really helped answer some of my questions about life here. I am still concerned about finding housing because our move is contingent on selling our house here so I have very little control over when the move will happen but I feel like it will all work out. Something about all this just feels to perfect not to.
Thanks for your info, AGAIN! After all the talk of people in and around the towns of Hibbing, etc, being unfriendly, I'm taking another look at the surrounding states.
My main concern is heat--I want cooler summer temps than I have in PA. What is Vermillion like in July and August?
Sorry, this is the Great Plains. The weather here is one of extremes. It gets very cold in winter and very hot in summer. Vermillion, on the east side of the state, also gets very humid. I would describe July and August weather as vile, unbearable, miserable and horrible. Every year I say I can't survive another summer here, but I'm still here for some reason. (Some posters born here say the summers aren't that bad. Believe me - they are.)
I think your original idea of Duluth is better if you, like me, hate hot weather. Once you get east of I-35 or in the upper half of MN, summers are pretty doable and even lovely.
If you need cheaper rents, why not look at smaller towns. If you don't like the idea of Iron Range towns, why not look further West at Grand Rapids(if I were to go back to MN I'd pick Grand Rapids) or Brainerd or Thief River Falls or Detroit Lakes and etc. On the SE side, near Rochester, take a look at Stewartville, Rushford, Preston.
Actually, I know someone who moved to Green Bay WI recently, and they love it. I've never been there, so don't know it first hand.
Anyway, Vermillion, SD really is a great place to live - except for the weather.
