It is an open reservation, I believe....a lot of white/others own land there. Mainly farming, hunting, fishing and trapping in the area. I grew up in a small town close to this town, on the reservation.....but that was decades ago. All in all, still not a bad place, beautiful country side.

This rez. is much safer than most of the others in SD. It is pretty diverse as to white/natives. If you're into fishing, this is a great area. Even though I've lived in SD my whole life, I've never been to New Effington. I've been to Rosholt which seems like a nice little town and is close by.
Guess a person would just have to check it out in person. Unfortunately, in very rural SD there are houses sold at a massive discount as few people move in there any more for various reasons.
In the mid-1850s my great-grandfather from Norway homesteaded about 75 miles south of New Effington along the Minnesota border when the US was offering free land in South Dakota. The farm has been in the family ever since.
The changes in the small town my great-grandfather helped to establish has gone downhill and was sad to see last year after memories as a child visiting what seemed to be a bustling place for locals and farmers and their families. The younger generation has now moved on.
Check out the neighborhood first before moving. I’ve seen a couple really nice small towns in the area but all of these were off the reservation. I’ve never been to New Effington so can’t give an opinion on that.
I live in rural SD and not even if you paid me the $42k. Not always but 99.9% of the time moving to a really small town out in the middle of nowhere sucks. If you are from another really small town it isn't as bad. If you have ever lived anyplace with any amenities you will hate it.

You can be in a LOT more remote areas of South Dakota than New Effington.
I too, wouldn't move there as I'm used to having amenities relatively close by my whole life living in the Sioux Falls area the whole time. I grew up on a farm with a 1/4 mile long driveway. THAT ALONE is something I choose to never deal with in the winter let alone living in an extremely remote area.
I'm just speaking for me (and apparently you too), but everybody has different ideas of what utopia is.
Sounds like, the owner is going to have some work done to it, if it doesn't sell by 1 Apr....Wish it was up here in Alaska...but then, it probably wouldn't be listed for 42K..
I see it is pending now, someone must have made an offer.
