If you need the lake, maybe McCall Idaho, otherwise you'll get your fill of heavy snow pack and dense forest isolation the further East you head on 1-90 from Coeur d'Alene, and you'll still have a relatively easy commute to an urban center if that's your thing. Some of this stretch of corridor is referred to as Fourth of July Pass and gets snow even when it's raining in CDA. Townships along the way include Wallace, a quaint mining town with rich history. You'll also find mountain desolation, abundant snow and privacy in the St. Maries area, which is South of Coeur d'Alene. It's a relatively undiscovered area off the beaten path and it's lower property prices reflect that.

You need southern Idaho to find "Desolation Wilderness" type landscapes. Also the weather is more like Tahoe south of the Salmon River.

North Idaho is cloudy and has lots of trees. Not my cup of tea.

Forgot to mention Lake Chelan. It is Washington's states equivalent of Lake Tahoe. I haven't looked at prices recently, but I believe it is a little more expensive than Lake Tahoe. You also get wineries and a nice small town, outside of summer. Chelan has been wired for fiber since the turn of the century. Not sure what the high tech infrastructure is in Lake Tahoe.

Just replace San Franciscan's with Seattle residents and you get exactly the same thing.

Not a fan of the Seattle folks I have met over here. Self-centered, selfish, money oriented. This summer they were mad at the Forest Service for not aggressively attacking forest fires. At a public meeting they talked about "acceptable casualties" for firefighters so the smoke would not hurt their business. After the three fatalities, they realized it wasn't a game and got really quiet. The mayor of Chelan got voted out of office as a result. Seems all those Seattle folks are not registered in Chelan!!

Only downside is weather from Thanksgiving to President's Day.That period of time the weather in Chelan is just as horrid as Seattle. Rest of the year it is a warmer in Chelan than Tahoe.

As for hiking lots of people from Seattle. No permit system. A very small portion of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness is like Desolation Wilderness it is under limited entry.

McCall, ID, or Wallace, ID. Wallace, ID, is chock full of cool, old historic buildings and lots and lots of interesting history. Even Kellogg, ID, might fit your bill. Woods and forest and ice and snow and history all combined.

ID actually is FULL of prime wilderness areas!

Get yourself a GA small aircraft! There are hundreds of back-country strips in ID.

One of my friends really likes Yellow Pine, ID (near McCall, but DEEPER in the WOODS!).

"Forest" and "desolation" are opposites to me. A burned-out forest, now that's desolation!

Webster on "desolation":
Quote:
: extreme sadness caused by loss or loneliness
: the condition of a place or thing that has been damaged in such a way that it is no longer suitable for people to live in : the state or condition of being desolate
Are you sure that's what you want? Or do you just want "remote"? There are some ranches up on Moyie River Road and Perkins Lake north of Moyie Springs in North Idaho that are about as remote as it gets...

Oh yeah, forgot about Kellogg. Beautiful mountain town, and much closer to CDA than Wallace. Further out is Silver Mountain ski resort. People rent out condos there month-to-month. I've seen them cheap in off-season. You could possibly rent there while scoping out locations between Coeur d'Alene and Wallace.
