Pondering retiring to the STG area but have not yet visited. I have not found any 55+ communities there, so am I missing them? We are younger retirees (63 and 55) and since we'd be arriving knowing nobody, we'd prefer an established community with people near our age so making friends will be easier than just plunking down in any old neighborhood and winging it. Please keep comments focused on the question....opinions about politics, crime, Mormons, traffic, California migration, weather are for other threads.

Sun River is here. I don't know of any others.

Although technically not classified as a retirement community, the majority of residents are 55+ here at Harrisburg Estates in Hurricane. It is a very quiet, peaceful neighborhood, very few kids around and mostly senior related activities at the clubhouse.

Just an observation...
I realise when the OP moves in, they are unknown to most and probably have no family at all within an hour or less. We moved to Utah and finally retired here and had our kids within a reasonable distance.
It was actually a joy to have them close to us because of the grandkids.

If and when you move into a neighbourhood with only old and feeble people, of which there are plenty in the St. George area, you might get a bit "offish" to kids in general.

We enjoy living in an older, well established, neighbourhood with a few kids around.

So..., when you visit an area with a lot of retired people around, do not disregard that area if you see some small kids running around. IF you love children, and we do, you might even become the "grandparents" of the neighbourhood kids... Imagine how much you can teach those kids!

Thanks and I'll offer a little more context for any additional responses...

We're relatively young retirees (64 and 56) so we aren't interested in neighborhoods that roll up the sidewalks at dark. One poster was correct, we'd be arriving with no social network ofr family, so that's why we're looking for a "vibrant" community with a social scene oriented to people closer to our age bracket (yes, I know we'll get older too but not there yet!)

We don't have kids, and while we don't dislike them, when you haven't any of your own, it's not interesting to listen to others drone on and on about theirs (including grandkids). For example, we took one place off our list because when we visited, the pool (which I'd be paying for and want to relax at) was filled to capacity with hoards of visiting grandkids screaming all afternoon. Sorry. No way.

I KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING HERE WILL WRANKLE SOME. THIS IS WHY WE'RE FOCUSING ON 55+ COMMUNITIES VS A REGULAR NEIGHBORHOOD. WE ARE NOT ANTI-CHILDREN. Just being honest with a little humor. Don't get offended. No haters please.

So is there anything else we're missing? What does St. George have to offer younger retirees? We'd like to plan a visit, but we'd like some additional input on the makeup of the area and why it's been cited as a good place to retire.

Nope, you are hopefully not "wrankle" anybody reading your request and comments.

Just realise that you are or want to move to a State that is almost entirely based on large families...

It is just some of your kind that are now moving in and do not want small fry in their neighbourhood(s).

That is why you need to look around some more, and maybe even another State, where people like you are more abundant...

In the end, you may get used to anything sooner or later, and when you still think that Southern Utah might be a good place to retire, you may get to like the family-oriented quirks (so weird, that the people of this State might be well from another planet...)

Then what's all the fuss being made about St. George and retirees we hear about? Are you telling me that's incorrect? We saw a hugely successful Toll Bros. 55+ community in Las vegas last year and the builder rep told us they were breaking ground for a similar community in St. G.?

Motomaker - With all due respect, I'm very aware of how to search the internet. I'm hoping to find someone who might live in one (and by 55+ I'm referring to an active adult community, not assisted living or worse - we still ski and backpack).
