Cold weather would be welcomed- particularly in summer.
I think Cedar City is a really bad idea for a COPD person. Elevation and snow will be hard on him. It was on my husband when we lived in Pollock Pines, Calif. I had to move us down to the valley. I sympathize with the problem of hot weather making it harder for your husband to breathe. So for what it's worth, I think Cedar City has too much snow (yes, to the shoveling), is too cold for much of the year, and has too much elevation for comfort.

Cedar does not get as much snow as some have said on here. I am from northern Indiana and the winters there are MUCH worse. The snow melts off during the day in Cedar. The sun shines nearly everyday. It can get cold but the sun is always shining. In the summer though I wouldn't say that it is "cold". It gets hot but there is not humidity to deal with. In St. George it's ungodly.

I have lived in Cedar for a year and have enjoyed the weather although the social scene is horrible. You will struggle to find friends here. No one goes out and everyone is in their own closed social circles. Most don't "live" here but have commuted here as college students.

If you've only lived in Cedar for a year you've only experienced mild winters. We have had a whole month where the high was 11 degrees within the last 5 years, and some years the snow does pile up.

Smile St.George is. Bigger

St.George is more popular and diversified, with a lot of retirees, shopping, hiking etc,, and warmer temperatures, Cedar City is beautiful , small population, college town, great restaurants, hiking, skiing nearby..and lts of outdoor things to does in St. George, St. George has a university too, lots of traffic...vist bot places as make a decision... Where you buy real estate will certainly depend if you have children to educate as schools are so different in areas of St. George. The west side is quieter, and has great views of the mts, and less traffic than the crowded east side with ore shopping and industry area..

Tempatures. Cedar city is four seasons. It has cold winters and snow. St george is more "2 seasons" the summers are hot, with temps over 100 for a 12 weeek period, though with low humidity not as bad as 100 in most cities. The winters are mild. It lightly snows every 3-4 years.

If you have no kids in school you have options in both places for fair priced housing(with kids in school it dramstically changes where you can live). Cedar would be cheaper for housing to buy but overall cost of upkeep keeps the cost simliar (you might spend 20k extra in st george but utilities are cheaper). Land/large lots are much easier to find and cheaper in cedar. If you want more then .25 acre, then Cedar is better. If you want your yard maintained so you can travel and not worry, st george is the place.

Taxes are low compared to almost anywhere else in the country in both places. My taxes are 1/6 of what they were for the same value house when I moved here. taxes are just not a worry.

Depends what you are looking for in neighbors? If you want retirees then St George has alot more neighborhood with retirees. Cedar city overall is younger in age with neighborhood based around college life(which is dull, lots of married families in college, not party life), younger families, places with land. If you are looking for a mixed age neighborhood then St george has bloomington, blooington hills, santa clara, areas that have slightly older homes but are mixed with young families that are there because of good schools and retirees, and residents that have lived there for 25-30 years.

Views, Both places have neighborhoods with views. Views might cost a bit more but I wouldn't worry too much about finding a home with views.

After living in the east coast for years, forget about great resturants and entertainment. yes, there is an occassional resturant that wows you(sadly the turn over is very high), and besdies tuachan located closer to st george(which is hit of miss by your tatse), you get lucky for whatever entertainment comes to town or whatever plays/music the two schools Dixie college (st george) or cedar city (SUU) puts on.

Now Las vegas has plenty of entertainment and is a little less then 2 hours from St George or 3 hours from Cedar. Many Many people spend a day or a few days a month shopping, seeing shows, eating out in Vegas and then come back to the quiet life in Utah.

Both Utah cities only seem to have the chain stores and resturants, more in St george then Cedar.

Also if Healthcare is a concern, please look into your plan and the options. IHC runs both cities only hospital. There are not all specialists in either city or maybe only 1 specialist and the list is closed. Rhemtology/endocrine/neurology are lacking. Also mental health help is almost non-exsistent. If you have VA you might have to go to SLC or Vegas for most services. The one thing that is decent is cardiology, if you are straight forward like a heart attack/bypass/stroke, rare issues you are off to SLC/Vegas. Cancer treatment is getting better as is maternity. Also Othropedics is good. Hip/knee replacements are so common and there are many good PT/rehab places.
