Thank you for your information. Based on reading about St. Louis in City Data Forum threads, St. Louis County is relatively safe while high crime areas are usually north of Delmar Ave. into North County and east of Central West End down to Dutchtown before South County starts. Agree...I worked in that environment for decades. OP might be able to negotiate within the published range. If in a political appointee spot there might be some negotiation. If there is a union involved there will be an added barrier to going outside any kind of normal salary range. Remember, state employee salaries are public record so one's coworkers know exactly what a person's salary is.

After research, I have narrowed down to a few neighborhoods in St. Louis that captured my attention in no specific order:High crime areas are north of Delmar Blvd. up to North County and east of Central West End down to South City/Bucktown before South County starts, does that sound right?

I live east of Skinker BUT in the central corrdidor - the Gate District (between Chouteau, Jefferson, I-44 and Grand by the SLU hospitals. I am not saying the is no crime here, but being in this area since 2009 - I have had no issues. No break ins, no car theft etc. I am sharing this because I don't agree with a blanket statement that says high crime areas are *EAST* of Skinker.
I am bordered also by amazing neighborhoods: Compton Heights and Lafayette Square and then Soulard. Other areas areas around which are improving are McKinley Heights, Benton Park and Fox Park. Nearby are more future developments on Chouteau that will include Target, Top Golf and more. The central corridor is changing right before our eyes.
Lafayette Avenue has completely transformed since I moved here. There are numerous new beautiful and homes of different types build all around me. I am very centrally located and I can see the Arch from out front. Here is a street view of my neighborhood.

I don't agree with the east of Skinker comment either. It's too broad and there are swaths of great neighborhoods east of Skinker. E.g. all of SW City and Forest Park.
