Does anybody have an idea of the neighborhood for several blocks west of Kingshighway toward Union going south of Page? Once upon a time, in the 1960s, I was a little familiar with some of those streets (Cates, Cabanne, Raymond, Vernon, Maple) and some of the houses. They were stately when built but landlords had not invested much in upkeep. Many were looking sketchy from the outside but were gorgeous inside. That was 45+ years ago and I left town in the 1970s. There is a 'Things you remember...' thread about St. Louis that caused me to think about that area. I did Google Street View and was happy to see that the place looks pretty good. Maybe a few notches better than it did. Back then I recall that there was an older generation of Black residents in some of the houses and quite a few broken up into tiny apartments. Some were built as multi-family houses. Is there gentrification going on in that area? The housing stock was well built based on what I saw in the 1960s and it has mostly lasted. I suspect they were built in the 1890s - 1910? Some look older. Some are boarded up. Some are gone.

I’m not familiar with it…but this guy does a really good job of documenting neighborhoods in STL, so try here, perhaps?

Thanks for that link.
This is the Academy neighborhood. The neighborhood is to the east of Soldan HS. He has some photos of the residential blocks on the website. Most look occupied and maintained. Some are boarded up. All of it looks substantial. There is some amazing housing stock in the city that simply could not be built today.

Cool houses, bad area that has done nothing but get worse since your time being familiar with it.
