For those who are looking for more than just malls and suburbs - maybe this thread can give more of a flavor of the communities that housing developments are built around.

To start... this is a photo composite of the village of Camillus (located in the Town of Camillus), and its immediate surroundings. About 15 minutes from downtown Syracuse, depending on which route you take.

Clockwise from top left:

Green Gate Inn (restaurant/B&B), Camillus Baptist Church (on Main Street), sunflower fields (many locations in early August), Maxwell Memorial Library (on Main Street), Camillus Erie Canal Park (less than 5 minutes from Main Street), Gillie Lake (has public swimming beach), Village of Camillus Main Street (also center photo).

This is Fairmount, the more suburban area and commercial district of the Town of Camillus, and about five minutes closer to Syracuse. It was ranked the 27th best place in America to raise kids, by Fortune magazine, last year.

Clockwise from top left: Typical Cape Cods in Fairmount Hills (Lake Lawns) subdivision; baseball field at Shove Park; Fairmount Glen Miniature Golf, one of the oldest mini golf courses in the U.S.; busy traffic at Fairmount Corners; the oldest building in the hamlet, c. 1808; one of the quieter areas of Shove Park; the shrine at Holy Family Catholic church; (center pictures) the Target at Fairmount Fair shopping center; more Shove Park.

(Fairmount is an unincorporated community, officially a "hamlet" - but at 10,000+ people, it has a bigger population than some New York cities...!)

These are photos I just had "lying around" at the moment...

Great photos, they really show a lot of the things I like about living here.

The state should build a sandy beach here.
