Ok so I don't have any mobile internet and was thinking about buying a cheap RCA Voyager tablet (walmart $38) along with a FreedomPop hotspot. I thought when traveling the U.S if I couldn't get a free wifi signal then I'd use the hotspot -or- when I can get free wifi use the hotspot as a more secure way to do banking, check emails, etc. Is there something I'm overlooking or is this a good idea? Thx!
The general concept sounds pretty good, but:
Remember that this is a WiFi used outside your home.Make sure you put in a really REALLY complex password. Also, make sure your WiFi encryption method is a robust one. IE: WPA2-PSK rather than WPA or the others that can be hacked easier (since you mentioned doing banking on it).
I looked on the FreedomPop and the Amazon product page and never found a description of the encryption methods available.
Also, look at the Amazon product reviews, (negative), as there are several who bemoan the poor business practices of FreedomPop. (Hard-sell to upgraded ($$$) plans, nearly impossible to cancel, false charges that are not credited). This doesn't sound like a company that's trying to sell an honest product for an honest fee.
There is a lot of free wifi in fast food restaurant and rest stops along major highways. Motels usually have free wifi. The hot spot may not be needed.
I would not do banking on them.
Research VPN's. These provide a secure link and should be ok for banking from the free wifi spots.
I don't have a smartphone or any mobile internet device yet. That's why I was thinking of getting a cheap tablet to keep in car and use free wifi or buy a cheap hotspot for emergencies or when traveling to check emails, access banking etc.

Understood, but do you have a cellphone at all? If so, which carrier plan do you use?
