I live about a mile from Plant High School. South Tampa is desirable due to schools, close to downtown, close to bridges to go to St Pete, beach etc. Plus you are going against the traffic if you work outside of South Tampa. Everyone comes in due to downtown. Close to Bayshore Blvd which is beautiful to exercise. It’s really about location location location. Neighborhoods are a mix of older and newer homes. It is getting more crowded but still super easy to get around.

No, really, South Tampa is one of the more expensive areas in Tampa, it's populated by a strange mix of knockdown/new builds and bungalows from the 40s and 50s. It will be underwater in a large hurricane and is an evacuation zone, I believe. Congested and traffic is difficult, but for that matter, you can say that about the Tampa area in general.

Athletics differs by school. For instance, Armwood HS has one of the best football programs in the county, but I'm not sure I would send my kids there for academics, or any other sport. This is common across the school district. I can think of a few exceptions, like maybe Newsome HS, which is excellent academically ("A"-rated school as is Plant HS) as well as has a very strong athletic program. However, it's an outlier.

I graduated from Armwood High School, class of 91. From everything i have heard from friends that still live in the area... that statement is true, unfortunately.

I used to work for the school district in administration. I worked out of the Plant City area, so I know Armwood and the others well.

While there are all sorts of wonderful things you can say about Plant HS and others in that neck of the woods, it really all boils down to parental involvement and the value placed on an education by the student's family.

I've seen a number of kids come out of Title 1 schols go to Ivy League colleges, so just because you go to Plant or one of the other highly rated schools is no guarantee of a good education.
