Education, like many fields, is full of abbreviations, acronyms, and field-specific jargon.

And when we have had positions open, they have been posted as "SPED teacher," "SPED inclusion paraprofessional," etc.

and the Special Ed field is probably the biggest user of jargon in the education world.

Never heard of people in the field calling it "sped" as pronounced as one word, though.

It used to be called SPED until it became rather condescending to refer to the "SPED kids." The term, the classification, and the teacher certification has been updated to Students with Disabilities or SWD.

I prefer the person-first term students with disabilities. It's clear without any jargon, and it doesn't sound derogatory.
