Hi I have a friend, who is a Teacher Assistant currently living in Milwaukee. Her husband is retired and on Social Security. Renting a 2 Bed for 500/month plus utilities from family. My friend has 3 years experience and makes 17-18/hr with full benefits. She also has a 2nd job as a caregiver.
Their kids and 3 grandkids are relocating to NC near a major metro area, and buying their home. Friend and husband want to rent. She has looked at a few school districts and saw that the pay is around 12-13/hr. Due to budget cuts most TA are now required to drive a school bus/get a CDL. She is concerned she will not be able to meet this requirement. Rents appear to be rising steadily, and wages not keeping up. Since the husband no longer drives, this will limit their search. They want to be near family but are afraid of being priced out and depleting retirement savings. Any advice from teachers or school staff would be appreciated.

I am not sure what you want as far as advice.... TA’s in NC make around 20k per year. Unless something seriously changes in our general assembly I don’t see that changing. Our district does not make our TA’s drive buses but anything can change at any time. Moving to Raleigh or Charlotte?

OP, you may want to post in the NC forums, if you've not already done so.

I was deeply interested in relocating to the Raleigh area in the 2006-2008 time period. One of the employers I interviewed with was Wake County Schools (Raleigh NC), and since my wife is a TA here in Michigan I looked at the TA wages in NC as well.

School Districts in NC are primarily County Wide districts and pay scales are set by the State rather than the local Districts themselves. This may be different from where you are located now, very different from Michigan. I understand there are adjustments to the State wide scales to compensate for the higher COL in metropolitan areas.

Pay Scales for all positions are low compared to what we experience in Michigan. Although I worked then and work now for private sector employers, I was looking at more than a $20K pay cut to work as a Construction Manager for Wake County. My wife would have seen a $5K cut to be a TA for Wake County. Realize this was over a decade ago.

Because the pay scales are set by the State Government they are readily available on web sites and you can do research from your current home.
