I checked out the Sex Offender Registry via City-Data and also on TBI. WOW, that seems like a lot for a relatively small population. It's probably less than FLA but it's several times more than three cities I lived in in NYC.

What's up with that?

Perhaps you could be more specific? Are you comparing the entire state of TN with various NY cities? Did you mean to post in a particular city subforum?

I looked at stats for Cookeville, Chattanooga, Maryville, and Knoxville that's why I thought it might be better to post here instead of the individual subforums. I compared them to Bayside, Great Neck, Mineola - all NY.

You should know that Tennessee lists all registered sex offenders, while New York does not list its Level 1 (low risk) sex offenders and lists just Levels 2 and 3, per its own web site:
https://www.criminaljustice.ny.gov/nsor/

Of the places you listed, here's how they stack up. Since the Tennessee sex offender registry lists offenders by zip code and not by city limit, I'm going to list them by county as a better representation. And I'm going to use just the 25 largest counties in the state. Of the cities you mentioned, Cookeville is in Putnam County, Chattanooga is in Hamilton County, Maryville is in Blount County, and Knoxville is in Knox County. As you can see, those four counties have very similar concentrations of registered sex offenders. Williamson County, a very wealthy suburb of Nashville, has the lowest concentration in the state, by far.

  1. Shelby...937,166...2,678...0.29%

Thanks everyone. Even when I look at an entire borough, NYC numbers are surprising low. It's even lower where we live now but I guess it's better to know where they are than not. I am aware this is only those who are registered. Lord only knows about the others.

But it's definitely disconcerting when you are looking at all those dots on a map.
