New user to this site and I was hoping I could get a little direction from some Tennessee natives or some NJ transplants to TN. My family and I have lived in NJ our entire lives. We live in a small beach town that’s overwhelmingly conservative. We are practicing Catholics and would like to continue Catholic education/church-life for our family (or a public school that isn’t progressive). Our state and our public school curriculum has become too progressive for our family culture and we have been seriously contemplating making a move to TN. (Not to mention expensive.) We are *not* city people by any means, my husband grew up on acres of farmland and he loves living that lifestyle. My husband works in Pharma and would have to find a a new position in the science/pharma industry in TN. Our price range for homes I would say is between $450-550,000 on a minimum of about an acre. I’m hoping someone can tell us where to start our search for the best area to fit our family needs. I’ve been scrolling the boards looking for a story similar to our own and couldn’t find exactly the answers I was looking for. As much as I love NJ, we truly want to live in a state that reflects our values and family objectives.

I’m not sure if this is even possible but an area in TN that has somewhat cooler weather would just be a bonus.

Im surprised you couldn't find any past threads on this topic, because there seems to be one covering people wanting to move to TN to escape (fill in the blank), want land, good schools, different political climate than they have where they are, and a safe area with good schools every week. Oh, and better weather.

Where you look is really dependent on where you find a job. Looking in Knoxville are for example, but the job is in Nashville really is a waste of time. Real estate prices are also all over the place. An acre in a rural area with a mobile home on it is going to be fairly cheap, yet an acre property with a 4000 SF house on the water with be extremely high.
Rural areas will be much cheaper, but there are trade offs, some of them huge.
I suggest doing a deeper search on past threads and start reading. There is a huge amount of information on these topics that's already been discussed in depth. Maybe not as specific as moving from NJ, but that really isn't all that relevant. After all, you are looking for information regarding TN.

The job is really the foremost driver to your search for a place to live. The State of TN is widely different in the major metropolitan areas.

If you want to be near Catholic schools, that will limit you to the big cities (Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga), all of which have some very reputable Catholic schools. In the case of Nashville, the northern suburbs of Hendersonville and Gallatin have solid Catholic schools, and your budget would let you live in a more rural setting if your husband doesn't mind a commute.

But, really, Barking Spider was right in that you need to figure out where your husband will be working first and then go from there. Any town with more than, say, 20,000 people or with lots of northern transplants will likely have a Catholic church.

There were many threads I found useful tips in. I’m also new so I don’t know I’m navigating this to its’ fullest potential and got post-happy as I’m falling into a TN rabbit hole. I only have personal experience living in NJ and I mention my husband working in Pharma because where we move would have to have that industry, besides/along with all the other wonderful things. In NJ, there are only a handful of areas that even have Pharma (so I wanted to rule out or rule-in places we could look in TN). Majority of Pharma here in NJ are northern (more “city” - not what we’re looking for), there is the west NJ like Princeton area that is very expensive, and then there are a couple companies located where we live “south” in the central area (conservative area, houses not on top of each other, small towns, etc.). If you had never lived in NJ, or even near us now, you would never know there were smaller Pharma companies as far South as us - most people would tell you North Jersey or Princeton area (big name companies) and you would miss out on looking for a job in Pharma in our unique area. So I guess I was hoping for some hidden gem of a town or county, if that makes sense. I mentioned price point and land because here, there are certain towns or counties that would immediately get crossed off if you were looking for that size of property and/or that price point. I kind of know what I’m getting if you mention the name of a town to me in NJ. I guess I was hoping for someone in the same industry with the same community/living preferences to lead me in the right direction. I will read on.

Not sure if pharma means something like Walgreen, CVS, Kroger with large retail pharmacy? With health care in hospital setting? Corporate office like HCA?

Nashville may have largest diocese in TN with many good schools. About 76,000 Catholics.

I apologize, I should have specified. J&J, Merck, Novartis, Pfizer, etc was what I meant, but doesnt have to specifically be those large Pharma companies. Mostly I saw science field jobs in Nashville.

I noticed there is a company called UPM Pharmaceuticals in Bristol, TN and there is St. Mary's Catholic School in Johnson City, TN (pre-school-grade 8). I've driven by the school and it looks pretty big with a nice campus.

I would do a search using job sites or Linked In. I saw some pharmaceutical jobs in Memphis and Nashville.

Pharm/science tech jobs will pretty much limit you to Memphis and Nashville, and truthfully, probably Nashville. Nashville is definitely the most expensive city in TN and you will have to avoid the nicest suburbs like Brentwood and Franklin to get that land at that price point, most likely. I would like west, east, north and south of Nash in Sumner, Rutherford, Wilson and Cheatham counties.

Not sure what the details of experience or career goals might be from those few words, but their are technology careers in East Tennessee. Doesn't hurt to inquire: https://www.google.com/search?q=east...state=tldetail
