Howdy y'all.

Moving to TN soon and a big outdoor enthusiast. I'm having trouble finding exactly how far is Clarksville from any sort of hikable elevation. Obviously I know where Great Smokey national park and the big mountain towns are, but are there any closer hidden gems?

It doesn't have to be huge but if anyone is familiar with the Texas hill country or surrounding areas of Birmingham, maybe something like that too.

Check out the state parks.

For themselves and for spots outside them. For hills, you can find some closer than the Smokies, 1-2 hours east and south of Nashville.

Clarksville is close enough to KY that you can also check out some of the state parks there. Worth a visit on KY/TN/VA state line is Cumberland Gap National Park.

You can try this site: https://www.tn.gov/finance/sts-gis/gis/data.html

OR, Try Google Maps in Satellite view and Terrain Layers you can zoom in and hold ctrl key down in combination with left mouse button and scroll your mouse to change to different views to see elevation. you can also put google maps into 3D view..

Try looking up Perry County about 65miles south of Clarksville, down 13..there's TN and Buffalo Rivers, parks and lots of hills.. And, be careful during the summertime in TN for Timber Rattlers..

There's also plenty of Hills near Chattanooga..

Check out Land Between the Lakes, west of Clarksville, with tons of outdoor stuff to do..

Oh, I was just in Texas Hill country (Junction, Camp Wood, Vanderpool, Leaky, Medina) hunting two weekends ago and live near Ft Hood, for a little while longer...

Aw dang, I missed the comments!

I appreciate the good tips. Perry County is now on the list.

Lake Medina is a nice one.

In addition to the other suggestions, consider including Southern Illinois in your search:

Shawnee National Forest
Tunnel Hill Rail to Trail (45-55 miles long) https://www2.illinois.gov/dnr/Parks/...unnelHill.aspx

You can also do an internet search for Tennessee State Parks in order to find parks with hiking trails.

One of my favorite places to visit is Ft Donelson military park near Dover TN. Site of civil war battle. Bald eagle nest for 15 years. Some hiking along the bluffs. May be other trails in Land Between the Lakes.

Second site is Lake Reelfoot. In the winter time area becomes attraction for wild eagles. Because of the clear water becomes attraction for migrating birds.

You should check out the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, just a short drive up I-24 to Cadiz and across to the LBL, or take US 79 from Clarksville to Dover and go up. "Approximately 100 miles of trails and 200 miles of scenic roads lead to some of the most wonderful spots at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Native wildlife, plants and wildflowers thrive in our woods, fields, and lake shores. Our trail system is extensive, offering a variety of excursion possibilities."
