I am wondering what medical insurance companies one might suggest for international medical insurance coverage/emergencies while traveling?
I have gone with Allianz in the past.
Looking for recommendations and experiences.
In addition, I have quite a naive question:
Say you obtain travel medical insurance for 30 days, and on the last (30th) day of a trip, you get sick/hospitalized for 3 months. Generally speaking, would you only be covered for that Day 30 (which is Day 1 in the hospital in this example)? I know it may seem like a silly question, but I never thought about this until today so I am just about to start looking into this this weekend.
On the 30 day question best to ask the providers. Also check on do they try to use your current insurance first like if you have a medigap that covers 60 days outside country?
Best of luck

I've been using World Nomads (not that it's best).
Just easier for me and covers activities that I do while traveling.
Such as renting scooters, hiking, water sports.
I really would like a comprehensive yr round, multi trip travel insurance, that would not be burdened with 'trip cancellation' risk. I'm willing to bear that cost, and looks like it jacks up the premium a lot.
I'm trying to remember what I did last year for a 3 month trip, I can't remember exactly but iirc I used my premium travel credit card (CSR) to buy the air fare & that insurance covered the first 30 days. I bought Allianz coverage for the time after that expired.
I know AMEX also has a highly regarded travel CC too that should at least be the equal of Chase Sapphire. Both are very expensive but offer approx $300 travel credit right off the top. CSR has primary vehicle insurance that covered some minor rental vehicle damage that happened to me about 45 days in, I suspect AMEX matches that. Well worth the cost of the cards especially with all of the other perks.
If you might take another trip this year you may consider getting an annual travel insurance plan, not just one trip.
Do you have a travel credit card? If so, check and see if it has any protections.
I have the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, and although it's a bit expensive, it provides the typical travel insurance/protection for all non-refundable travel expenses I put on the card (rental car, lost luggage, trip cancellation/interruption/delay). Plus, it provides some medical coverage ($100,000 for medical evacuation and $2500 for emergency medical services). For medical, the trip has to be at least 5 days and no more than 60 days, so keep that in mind.
Just be aware that ALL of them use the same 3rd party for claims.
If you read the reviews, all are negative regarding claims. Horror story after horror story. I spent about a week researching all of this and finally gave up.
It was so bad, we ended up without any for our 2-month trip we're on now.

sounds like Medicare... (On my 4th appeal, for a very obvious and well documented decision)
