I am a huge fan of buying luggage from TJ Maxx, Burlington, or somewhere similar. You can test them out in the store, buy only the pieces you want/need, all for a very reasonable price. They usually have pretty decent luggage. And if they break or something happens to it, you're out less than $100 bucks.

If you don't travel a ton (We usually do 1-2 2 Weekish Europe Trips a year where we take planes, trains, and automobiles and drag them all over cobbled streets, and maybe a week in Mexico plus local travels), you will likely have it for years. I
