I have a Garmin Nuvi. I love the thing. I have to say though, Austin has grown so quickly that it gets confused sometimes. IE: on the toll road it thinks I am off roading.
I currently live in SoCal and it is spot on. I was surprised to see it struggle in Austin. I suppose it would be like that in any area growing so rapidly.

I have a Garmin too. I LOVE it. I am incredibly directionally impaired, and I swear it's changed my life!! All my friends w/a sense of direction think it's a waste of money, but if they'd been lost as many times as I have, they'd "get it." Love it!!

After a few years driving long haul, I've gotten where I can get to most any decent-size city in the U.S. without a map. But I do remember the frustration with our driver directions on the satellite receiver in the truck; misspellings, directions from exit ramps without orienting you on the highway first, etc. We're getting a "next generation" system in our trucks that will be a dream! (Finally, no more staring at the 12'3" overpass from the cab of your 13'6" truck cab ) I'll have to admit; some of my best "trucking stories" involve customer directions...

This may seem like an obvious suggestion, but have you looked at the TomTom website? It appears to offer country maps and updates. With respect to the US, I don't know whether there are separate maps for each state - at a certain point in navigating the site, you need to enter your TomTom's serial number, so I couldn't gain access to the section on specific maps.

Good luck!
