"Julie Schenecker left a note detailing her plans to kill her disrespectful children and then herself, saying "they talked back and were mouthy and that she was going to take care of it," McElroy said. She provided the same motive to police who interviewed her."
I read about this. Very sad. The news reports are inconsistent though. On the one hand it sounds as those she lost her cool, and yet she had bought the gun, and sent out messages stating she had been planning to do this for a while.
Regardless, very sad. Sounds as though she had long-standing emotional/psychiatric issues. It's such a pity this was not prevented.
When this story appeared in my local paper a few days ago, it eluded to the fact that she was involved in a car accident some time prior to the killings and sources stated that she had "not been herself" since the accident. Whatever happened, it's just inconceivable that a parent would do this to their children. Incredibly sad.
Perhaps when we can accept depression or any other type of mental illness, injury or disease as part of life and not some sort of personal failure, we may be able to see these types of cases less frequently. What's the difference between mental illness and cancer or leukemia? Neither is a disease one can snap out of or control. I think acceptance and treatment is the only way things like this ever have a chance of being prevented.
Finally going to trial. Jury selection started today in Tampa for the trial of Julie Schenecker. The jury will not be sequestered and the trial is expected to last 3 weeks. It's not a death penalty trial, the defense is going for insanity. Prosecution is going for a life sentence.
Colonel Schenecker divorced her in 2011 shortly after she murdered their children. She is indigent and has a court appointed attorney.
If anyone is interested there is live streams of the trial, the jury selection might end up lasting all week.
Has anyone properly evaluated that head injury of hers? I think it's crucial to find that out.
