State trooper accused of beating, threatening to kill wife | KING5.com Seattle

Happens every day.
Bail was set at $15,000, and Muren has not been charged with a crime.
Patrol spokesman Bob Calkins said Muren has been placed on administrative reassignment while he is being investigated.

Does anyone know why they wouldn't charge him with a crime? Do they save that for later, or something?

They will try to gather evidence before an indictment... If the evidence is there, he will face a grand jury in order to establish if there is enough evidence to warrant charges. If there are, he will be charged and face trial..

Got me because I don't know how in the world a judge can set bail without charges being filed. I mean what is the possible basis for detention much less arrest and I don't know how one has a first appearance without being charged first.

The story makes absolutely no sense.

I always heard they can hold anyone for up to 72 hours and charges must be brought within the 72, that's not unusual. What is unusual is setting bond, that usually comes at arraignment.

Innocent till proven guilty, especially in a he said/she said, but it's pretty strange that he says he can't recall making any threats, but doesn't believe his wife would fabricate them.

I figure that if I pointed a gun at someone and made them look down the barrel, I'd recall it.

It's one thing after another with WSP. Not long after I came to Seattle there was a trooper who was pulling over female motorists and fondling them; he called State Route 520 his 'hunting ground.' Then there were the 10 or so who got caught submitting diploma mill degrees in order to qualify for raises. They never seem to clean up their act. Nobody respects them anymore.

Too much TV, you can't hold someone without making an arrest which to my thinking can only be the result of a charge being put forth by the arresting authority. This 72 hour thing is the amount of time that a person can be held without a probable cause (first appearance) hearing. So again, I don't know how bond can be set without being charged first. I mean, what does a judge base the bond amount for if they have no idea what the offense is.

Again, I just think that it was a case of bad reporting.

Well I should have said arrest, but yes they can arrest and hold you for 72 hours but they have to bring some charges. Heck if they really want to toy with someone they can arrest hold for 72, let you go and rearrest and hold for another 72.

No...they save that for guys who aren't cops....now that he's out (bail, reasignment, whatever) he'll have plenty of time to go promise his wife a slow ugly death if she doesn't deny that he ever laid a hand on her....
