This theme is what made Basic Instinct such a disturbing movie. . . . and many others. Frightening when the cute, innocent looking ones are the most deceptive.

On a similar note, I remember seeing a program about Stranger Danger where psychologists interviewed children about what they expected a bad stranger to look like. Pretty universally they expected a cartoon villain type: ugly and scarred, gruff voice, dark clothes. The kids had a hard time imagining that a nice woman in a sweater and khakis could potentially do them harm.

Anyone who has secret fantasies about inflicting pain and suffering on another human being obviously can't present that obsession to people they know or the general public in terms of how they behave. That's why it's so difficult to catch many serial killers, they've cultivated a persona that they present to the outside world and being attractive, friendly, and engaging gives them a perfect cover. I've mentioned on City Data before that my former supervisor's step sister was one of Ted Bundy's victims. Here was a man who had all of the people he associated with convinced that he was a decent and trustworthy guy when in fact he was monster inside.
It's also interesting that many of the infamous killers were married, had families, and were involved in various social activities. The BTK killer was just such a man who even managed to fool his own wife and it was only when he described his horrific acts in open court without the slightest hint of remorse than everyone realized that he was a sociopath who had no empathy whatsoever for other people.
Murderers don't fit a physical profile, their appearances vary just like the general population. What they have in common remains unseen inside of their minds and usually only comes to light when they've been arrested for their crimes.
