To you Tucsonians, which NS street starts the east side? Is the Broadway Court neighborhood between Harrison andHoughton safe?

I've lived in Tucson on and off almost 40 years now. Personally I consider the Eastside anything east of Wilmot. But it's been 30+ years since I lived on the Eastside, so unable to comment specifically on Broadway Court.

For real estate, the local MLS uses this,

The Tucson Multiple Listing Service (MLS) defines East Tucson as being east of Wilmot Road, West of the Rincon Mountains, south of Speedway Boulevard, and North of Irvington Road. Zip codes for the east side of town are 85710, 85730, and 85748.

Why does this matter? Is the East Side considered somewhere desirable or undesirable ?

That's a pretty good definition. I'm currently staying at a friend's house in the the Tucson eastside, in the Palo Verde Park neighborhood. This is the 1 square mile area between Broadway & 22nd, and between Wilmot & Kolb. It is very convenient, but the vehicle noise from Kolb can be loud at times during the daylight hours. It is generally safe and most houses are kept up pretty well. Almost all the homes were built in the 1950s with brick construction, with low pitch roofs.

In Tucson, Wilmot/Tanque Verde is really the only commercial Avenue that runs north/south excepting for a couple of blocks on north 4th and a couple of miles of North Campbell... and that is all the way from the Downtown/Miracle Mile/Oracle moving east. That is why it is a convenient marker between central and east Tucson. While Kolb and Pantano have retail on them, it is not as dense as is Wilmot.

Another thing I like about the east side is you are tucked in the shadows of both the Catalina's and Rincon mountains. Yet unlike the Catalina foothills and Tucson Mt foothills, it has less of a critter problem. Particularly when it comes to rattlesnakes. While there are some neighborhoods that are snaky... most aren't. Pretty much anywhere in the Catalina foothills will have rattlers. And the Tucson foothills have the Mojave rattlers who are extra mean.

After dark in those areas you have to be somewhat watchful. Not so much for most parts of the eastside.

We initially house-hunted in Foothills and east side. Wanted privacy but found that even the 2 acre lots didn't give us much privacy as there are not a lot of leafy trees in the desert. We viewed a lot of homes in high-end areas of the East and foothills and there was a lways a yappy dog or kids shooting hoops that we heard on house patios. This in 700K neighborhoods.

We ended up on 5 acres on the southwest side and couldn't be happier!

We love the critters....gangs of javelinas, coyotes, bunnies, chipmunks, roadrunners, quail.

Yes it's a 20 minute drive to downtown eateries, 30 minutes to the east side, but we're retired and not in any rush to get anywhere. We travel a lot and are 15 minutes from TUS in non-rush hour.
