Depends on the neighborhood more than anything. They end up being hangout spots for people with nothing to do which wouldn't necessarily be bad except the people with nothing to do tend to be unsavory. There's three fairly near my house and only one of them would I consider unsavory. It's a combination of factors. We were planned post Watts/Compton so we built a lot of mini-ghettos interspersed. That particular convenience store is easy walking distance from one of the worst pockets of ghetto in the greater Sacramento area. Previous owner was on top of things and didn't sell alcohol and drove the loiterers off to go be unsavory somewhere else. Current owner? Not so much. It's just gone down hill. The only good thing about it is on Friday and Saturday they have a guy who does some pretty good BBQ in the parking lot. Otherwise it's just gross. The store is filthy and there's usually a bunch of people standing around drinking in the parking lot. That wouldn't be so bad except they're the kind of people that have beefs with other likeminded people and end up getting in fights and stabbing or shooting one another pretty regularly. Maybe they have some unofficial peace as way more stuff goes down where they're coming from. My cousin used to patrol that area and about every two weeks I'd get a call "guess where I am again" for another stabbing, shooting, 15-year-old girl getting raped, trunk full of automatic weapons because gang A was gearing up for a war with gang B. I don't even go for the BBQ anymore, which was pretty good.
