the whole counter-clockwise thing seems a bit arbitrary to me and I should have the option to go clock-wise to suit my immediate needs

Well, I don't come to a stop in a roundabout, but I am always on the lookout for people coming into the roundabout who don't know they are supposed to yield before entering the roundabout. I prefer self-preservation, and I don't want the hassle of a fender-bender, even though technically I have the right-of-way.
