I'd appreciate everyone's thoughts on the pros and cons of living in the above places. I'll be working in downtown and not that bothered about a commute as its more about the weekends.
We'll be buying rather than renting and looking at a budget of around CAD 1.1m
Also would like to hear thoughts on schools in those areas as I have two daughters of 4 and 2.
Out of the 3, I'd pick Port Moody. It has the best transit options for getting downtown - West Coast express, Evergreen Line (opening soon) and it has some great recreation options nearby moreso than the others IMO - Barnet Marine Park, Buntzen Lake, White Pine Lake, Belcarra. I don't know about specific schools but public education is generally pretty good and the student body is fairly well diverse in all 3 places.

Thanks for your input, do you know how long it takes from Port Moody to Downtown by the west coast express? Are there any particular areas of Port Moody which are better than others? Thanks

It takes about 45 minutes on the west coast express to go into downtown from Port Moody. The only thing is that the train doesn't run all the time, just at peak hours during the week. Most of Port Moody is pretty decent. I have a friend who lives there and it seems like a nice place. Any place close to the water will be more costly than places a bit further away.

Thanks for that, is it really 45 mins? The timetable suggests it's only 15 mins on the west coast express or am I reading it incorrectly? Or are there lots of delays?

I would think it's more than 15 minutes... it might be a bit less than 45 minutes but certainly more than 30 minutes. I had a boss who took the west coast express from mission and she told me it took an hour and a half one way and I figure it's less than half that. Keep in mind also that you need to factor time getting from waterfront station to where you are working downtown either on foot, skytrain or bus so that adds time.

I've had a check and on the route planner it's about 25 mins which isn't too bad. I'm not bother about a commute as believe it or not my commute in HK is about an hour door to door anyway. the company i'm potentially looking at is a 5/10 min walk from waterfront station. I wouldn't plan on taking the west coast express out of hours anyway.
since you're chinese, go with either Burnaby or Richmond, there are more dim sum places there
Good one! But I'm not Chinese, I just live in Hong Kong. But I'm actually ok to live a bit further away from the nearest dim sum place, as long as I've got a source of rice and my trusty rice cooker we'll be OK a bit further away.
