Just sometimes mass shootings happen in safe communities.

This is horrible. I've been there - not in a few years, but still... Is there no safe public place anymore? (And don't get me started on "thoughts and prayers"!)

My sincere condolences to family and friends of the victims. It never ceases to amaze me that in spite of the sheer terror they must have felt it was the instinct of many to help others escape. They should have never been in the position in the first place but they undoubtedly saved many from injury or death.

[mod note] Please folks. This is not the thread to discuss national gun control or other partisan political topics. There are active/current threads elsewhere on C-D where those topics are being discussed. [/mod note]

It saddens me greatly to awake to this news. I used to live in T.O., (Wildwood area), and have close ties to Pepperdine. It is reported that there were some Pepperdine students in attendance. For many years, T.O. and Simi would flip-flop every few years as being the safest cities in the country for their size, (based on F.B.I. statistics). Pray for our society, and bring our soldiers/sailors home, (shooter was an ex-Marine suffering from PTSD.)

My heart goes out to the family, friends and the entire community of Thousand Oaks. I was watching the live feed this morning of the procession for Sgt. Ron Helus, who lost his life when trying to protect others.
For as long as it's available (live), anyone can still watch it here:

Has nothing to do with being a "safe" community. These random mass killings can happen anywhere at anytime they are not linked to crime stats at all.

Thousand Oaks is a wonderful community - it is heartbreaking to see these all too familiar scenes playing out here as they have in so many other communities across the U.S.

Exactly. The shooter sounded like a very disturbed young man.

IMHO, there should be new laws or Law Enforcement regulations need to be in place regarding this type of encounter.

If he was taken into custody in April, this shooting would not have happened.
