Do teachers make good livings at this school? Is this a good school? What about teacher benefits? I'm a public school teacher and considering applying here. Anyone know about this area...? Rent? cost of living? culture? proximity to a singles scene? I'm single, of course. Will I die a lonely spinster here?

Thanks!

I don't know much about the school, other than that someone we know taught there for decades until he retired and just loved it.

It's possible you'd meet a significant other in Putney, but not much of a pool there. However, Putney is 15 miles up the road from Brattleboro, where I think the singles scene is about as good as it gets in Vermont. (Burlington arguably has more opportunities for singles, but the demographic is so very young.)

Putney is funky and adorable. Artists, the arts, robust co-op, community spirit. It's one of the few towns in Vermont that may actually resemble the stereotype some perpetuate about the entire state: Noticeable presence of trust-funders.

Yes. Eat here: index

Brattleboro and Putney are awesome towns. If you have the chance to be gainfully employed in either, TAKE IT! I miss my days in Brattleboro as a young (23) single man.

The Putney School is a highly regarded private school on a hill a couple of miles from Putney. When I lived in Putney the US Olympic nordic coach was a teacher and several Kennedy kids went there.

I wonder about being a single on a campus with primarily married couples...having to dedicate so much time to a place...live there (it's a boarding school and the teachers LIVE on campus, so their duties are almost never ending)...and the pay? Does anyone know about teaching here?

I have young teacher friends who lived at residential schools in more remote places ... and loved it. You become a part of the community (dinners, friends, etc). You also be able to make friends through the older marrieds (perhaps even young single ones).

And it's very good that Brattleboro is very close.

I would just keep moving forward with the process. Definately more of a time commitment with the living part but even if you taught there for a couple of years I would think it would provide an excellent stepping stone to a school with a more traditional living arrangement.

Personally, if your talking about a summer camp then living among the kiddies is part of the deal. Teaching secondary school and living among them is a diferent story but that's a 60 yo me.

I have no idea about the pay but the tuition/room/board is about $50,000 a year so I would hope the pay is good.
