Hello everybody,

One of my friend, originally from Vermont, is going to go back there after living in MA for 40 years. She is now 69, on Social Security and thinks that it will be easy to find a part time job, to supplement her SS, in the retail business in Burlington. I have the feeling that she's dreaming. From what I understand, jobs are scarce in Vermont and Burlington is full of students that will be tough competition. Am I wrong?
Thanks

It will be very easy. I don't care who you are if you want part time work for around $10hr you are going to get it. Getting a low paying job is not going to be a problem. The unemployment rate in VT for sept was 2.9%. Does it get any lower than that? You want a good paying job? that is a whole other topic.

OK, noted. I thought that even a low paying job at $ 10.00/hour would have been tough. My mistake.

This, applies to my area as well.

"Good" jobs are highly competitive but the low wage jobs are readily available.

That's pretty amazing because low paying job, where I am in the DC area, are NOT readily available. I know it's tough to believe, but many people don't find 10 bucks an hour jobs here, but you're saying no problem in Vermont, uh?

That is hard to believe. Looks like DC has an unemployment rate of 6.4% which is high. I know as of last year if you needed a job and would wok for $10 hr in Brattleboro you could go into the temp agency and they would put you to work that day. My son used them for awhile between jobs. They aren't glamorous tasks. I remember one was watching bread bake. Every now and then one loaf would burn or something and he had to pick it out. Try that for 8hrs a day. Drove him crazy just sitting in a chair....but it was a job.

I've been in the DC area since October 2006 and I found a job then and I still have the same one, so I've never look for another job in 11 years, but I walk a lot in town and in the suburbs in MD and I never see a sign for hiring. There are plenty of jobs in this area for which you need a lot of qualifications, but I don't seem to see any low paying job advertised. The thing is, in the DC area there is a huge uneducated migrant population and they might be taking all the low paying jobs? Just speculating here. But the availability of $10.00/hour jobs in Burlington is good news for my friend who should be there soon,
