I got a chuckle listening to public radio this evening talking about Vermonters who suffered through -30 temps and have (gasp) put a dent in their woodpiles. The theme was that since the past two years have been mild, not enough seasoned wood has been erected into woodpiles by the men, and that fresh cut wood is unusable. The cited example was a couple who had put by TWO cords of wood and were projected to run out by March.

Having grown up in Vermont and estimating that there was no downside to having six cords drying for the upcoming or next year, and understanding southern vernacular, my response is "bless their hearts..."

Hahaha......We might go through 2 cords a month during the heart of winter. Of course I prefer drywood but, fresh cut. or green as we call it is always part of the mix. It is useful at controlling the burn rate. Nice to have some green wood to put on before bed or when the stove runs hot on a warmer night.

I keep a few good dead standing trees marked with flagging on my land in case I run out. I think I burned two cords in 3 weeks with my big fireplace.
