because they have to be longer than winters in Illinois and Pennsylvania--and those were plenty long enough for me.

^^ In a nutshell ^^

One has to embrace winter, whatever it may present. Ice; cold; snow; sleet; painful, painfull wind. But if you're fortunate enough to pick a good day to be outside, or like myself - walking my dogs in near blizzard conditions tonight, you mighty also realize that it truly is lovely. It's nature at work.

Some people actually prefer the winters and weigh them against hot, humid, oppressive 6 months in parts of the south.

I am one of those people. I love winter here. I think it's beautiful and harsh and demands the most from me. Having lived in both climates for decades, I much prefer a winter I wish would end to a summer I wish would end. In winter, I can always add more gear and get out to do what I want/need to do. On oppressive summer days, I feel housebound and inert. Hot/humid makes me feel carsick wherever I am.

But hey, it's a good thing our climate preferences vary or we'd all move to the same place, right?

I agree totally! About the climate preferences, that is. It is so funny you talk about winter the way I feel about summer and vice versa, so that proves your point!

I liked Gran Torino too, D-Towner

...and I find I can dress for the cold, but dressing for heat is tough: People look at me funny if I walk around town in my boxers when it's really really hot out

While I am not a fan of extreme heat having been from one extreme to the other I have to say that in hot weather you stop and rest in the shade, but in extreme cold you have to keep working or moving to stay warm. The older I get the more I like to stop and rest.
