Do you want to be in a rural area? Suburban? "urban"? What about jobs?
If you are looking in the Burlington area Essex and South Burlington have well regarded school systems. If you want to live in a rural area, pick a town near St. Johnsbury that does not have it's own high school or belong to a regional district....your kids can go to St. Johnsbury Academy (high school) for free.
Let me know more details about what you are looking for and hopefully I can help you find a good match!

Towns near St. Johnsbury which do not have a public high school are Walden, Peacham, Barnet, Waterford. Monroe, NH is a sending town also. The Waterford School has a good reputation.
For the person who asked about jobs in StJ.....not too plentiful. Try microdataGIS, Lyndon State College, and look at the Caledonian Record newspaper online.
Deeds also asked about St. Albans....the Academy there is Bellows Free Academy. It just changed from a private to a public school. Don't know too much about it's reputation though.

Default Brattleboro vs Burlington?

How about Brattleboro for a town to move to? It is a nice area and close to Boston access, if you want that. I think the Burlington area has 200,000 people in its vicinity.

Having lived there since roughly the time when dirt was a new idea I'm biased, but I think the Burlington area is an exceptional place. It's won national awards for a dozen different things from a dozen different magazines and organizations.

I think Rutland County is a good area to consider. I think your kids would love it there
