I would much rather play on the actual consoles!!!!!
THEN GO BUY AN ENTIRE ARCADE IF YOU DON'T LIKE EMULATORS (see I can put an a lot of words in caps as well. For those that don't want to buy an entire arcade, you can go the MAME route. BTW, you do know the original arcade game used digital sounds right? It wasn't like there was a little band inside the arcade cabinet.

I had the real Stargate Defender, Defender, and a Multi - Williams stand up arcade game. And it was awesome once playing on these. But I lost my house and had to sell them. So now it'd be nice to play them on MAME. I did play the MAME version and wanted to build a MAME controller for Defender, Stargate, Robotron, and Tempest. But it's real nice playing Tempest on the Atari Retro games on Steam.

Plus some of those games are still pretty beautiful and addictive.

80's arcade games and Atari are great, but very simplistic. I grew up on Atari, but most people my age have no connection to it. My favorite gaming era is early 3D games like PS1, N64, and Saturn. However, I know a lot of people who won't even touch those games any more because they're so primitive (graphics, camera, tank controls). To me, there's nothing better than turning on the Saturn with a copy of the original Tomb Raider. Love it. Of course, I've also been dying to get a copy of Tempest 2000 on my Saturn as well because I enjoy the early arcade games too.

Retro Gamer is a fantastic magazine. However, it covers many generations of gaming. I would love to have a subscription!
If you own an Atari Jaguar, get Tempest 2000 for that system. That was the rare game where the Jaguar version was better than the Playstation or Saturn version. (I don't have the Saturn version, but I do have both Jaguar and Playstation versions, and Tempest 2000 on the Jaguar is better.)

As for the popularity of older systems, I go back to the Atari 2600 and Mattel Intellivision (and Magnavox Odyssey 2), so I remember all the older generations. I think the reason why the NES is more popular than the Atari 2600 and the Genesis and Super NES are more popular than the NES is the games, especially the sports games, were generally better on the 16-bit systems than on the 8-bit systems (either generation). There were A LOT of pretty mediocre Atari 2600 games back in the day, and most Intellivision games required two players. Still, there were a number of strong titles on the 2600 that still have a lot of replay value, particularly shooters like Yars' Revenge, Phoenix (and the very similar Demon Attack), Galaxian, and of course Space Invaders. The NES also had many crap games but generally had a stronger and wider variety of good games, and though the NES was pretty weak with sports games compared to the next generation, it still had the wildly popular Tecmo Super Bowl (and its lesser but still worthwhile predecessor, Tecmo Bowl), Baseball Stars, Blades of Steel (and Ice Hockey), and Punch Out. The 16-bit systems, especially the Genesis, had a much deeper variety of sports and racing games that still hold interest today, like the NHL series, the first Madden games, the Joe Montana Football series games, and the PGA Tour series games.

I actually do have a Jaguar, and I love that console. I even own a Jaguar CD (my favorite game is Battlemorph). However, I had to leave it behind in storage because my new apartment is too small. Only a few consoles came with me. The main reason I wanted to get Tempest for Saturn was just to kind of relive some of moments from playing the Jaguar version, because it is a great game!

I have gone back to collecting turbografx 16 games. The only problem is the games have become super expensive. I might buy the Japanese version 'pc enine" same games but much cheaper. I buy the occasional Nintendo cartridges.

I loved my TurboGrafx-16 even though I was the only one I knew growing up that had one heh. Was on a military base in Germany at the time and the BX there heavily promoted it while it was largely ignored in the states. I did just recently cash out of it and sold it all on eBay. Military Madness, Blazing Lazers, Devil's Crush, Neutopia series, Cadash, Dragon's Curse, and of course the Bonk's games among others were all gems.

LOL I knew one other kid that had a TG16 and we both got it when it went on sale at the local radio shack. It came with 4 games. They were being sold at really low prices when they couldn't compete with other game consoles. It is unfortunate it didn't do well here in North America, They didn't release too many games for it. The Japanese version, PC Engine, had hundreds of games. Had they released more games here it might have done better.
