I'm curious because I'm thinking of moving out of the essential/close to essential core of the DC area , yet still staying close enough to commute for work related reasons .

I'll also be adding a poll to see a sort of tally of responses .

People all over this area do it all the time. I am in Shenandoah Co and this area would at least provide you interstate all the way (81 and 66) but it is no closer. Rapp and Page means traveling on back roads quite a bit to get to an interstate. And I don't mean 2 lane gravel roads but roads that are not as fast as interstates. Personally I could have never done that when I was still working but I know plenty that did/do.

Most people seem to have voted against you for some reason , but I appreciate your insight regardless .

Commuting is a mental game more than anything. Why don't you try it out during the anticipated commuting hours and see what you think, your the best judge of what your willing to accept.

Every day? Doubt it. I'd struggle to see how that'd be less than a 2h commute each way.

I believe I voted "other" but not certain now. Again, no way for me as my 45 minute to Front Royal from Manassas then Edinburg was far enough for me. But I have friends who do this and they have no regrets considering the house/land they have. One friend drives from somewhere near Shepherdstown, WV into Dunn Loring near Vienna everyday.

I think it depends on your tolerance and kinda your lifestyle, too.

I know one or two people who live in Orange County, VA and commute into DC. To try to get ahead of the worst of NoVA rush hour traffic, they leave around 4:30 in the morning and then don't get home until after 6:00pm. If I had that commute/schedule, I would be too tired to do anything when I got home. (This is where the lifestyle comes into play) All the regular household chores would have to wait until the weekend and wasting your weekend on household chores is no fun either. Plus if you have children, finding the time and energy that they deserve would be difficult.

Now my husband's uncle lived in Strasburg, VA and worked in Chantilly. Since Chantilly is on the outer edge of the region, the commute was much more tolerable. But if you were to have to go all the way into DC on a daily basis, that may not make it feasible.

The areas you listed are a 2+ hour drive each way from DC, that equates to a full 4 hours of driving each day, definitely not commuting distance IMO. I would personally advise against it, but then again, it is your personal decision.
