I’ve lurked here for days trying to gather some data and viewed several of the past posts about this area to include the one similarly titled. Also noticed many of those are at least 10 years old.

I’m 37 never married and looking to be reassigned to this area. Wasn’t sure how things have changed in the last few years but never being to this region I’m looking for advice. I’ll have to stay about an hour around this location so I’d like to find a nice town to possibly move to. I’m not married so a healthy social scene would be very beneficial for making friends, activities, dating etc. I presently live in Scottsdale Az and Philadelphia before that so I am over the big city thing.

I assume the traffic tickets in blackstone is still a thing...

Thank you in advance for any assistance you may provide

I'd personally try Farmville.

All around are small Southside VA towns, unless you head towards Petersburg, which is more of a busy city area.

Do you pursue any outdoor activities like fishing? Just not what you are looking for in the way of activities beyond bars/taverns.

Yeah shooting, drinking, camping, hiking. Four wheeling, Exploring. Road trips all that is fun and exciting for me. With the right friends I’m down to do just about anything adventurous

Mostly there is a whooooole buncha of nothing, unless you are into family farms, but part of Ft Pickett has been built up in the past couple of years to host a major Federal Government security training center. There are some minor businesses in Blackstone that I think will expand in the future due to the increased visitors and staff from the training center. But, for now, working at Ft Pickett would put you just over an hour's drive out of Richmond and/or Petersburg. Petersburg hasn't had the greatest rep in the past but I understand that it is improving. Richmond is a pleasant city with a lot to offer for its size.

If you provide some answers to the survey questions in http:////www.city-data.com/forum/vir...-virginia.html, and post that to the Richmond subforum, locals would be better able to recommend neighborhoods that you might like and still be within reasonable commuting distance from Pickett.

You will be located halfway between and only a couple hours drive from both the mountains (lots of hiking, camping, rafting and hunting opportunities) and the beach (lots of party opportunities due to the military crowd around Virginia Beach) but also the chance to do some fishing or just lying around on the beach if you are into that kind of thing.

Have a lot of family in the Blackstone, Crewe, Burkeville, Richmond area. Agree that living in Farmville might be your best choice. Have never been to South Boston but hear it`s nice there.

If I was in your shoes, I'd locate at the edge of the 1 hour commute towards Richmond...that will put you between Picket and Richmond, where social/nightlife will be. Your daily commute could become a drag, but it will be nothing like commuting in Phoenix.

Finding outdoor activities is no problem anywhere in rural VA. For shooting, you have Pickett, 4-wheeling may be an issue...unlike AZ, there in no expanse of BLM land in VA...it is mostly privately owned.

Do you prefer city life or country life?

The Pedlar District of the Geo Washington NF near Buena Vista has a small ATV trail system. And there are a lot of timber tracts in southside VA but IDK if those are open for ATV riding. Going over into WV you will find a lot of opportunities; if the road does not have a painted center line, then you can ride you ATV on it. So living further west favors ATV use.

Virginia is great for that.

Yeah, it's mostly for people who are into fishing, but it is for hunting people too. I bet you can find a lot of info on here if you reach out.
