I think it is the biggest, but there are multiple popular lakes in Virginia.

If you are thinking of moving to Roanoke, there is also the small but popular Carvins Cove Lake just to the north of town. https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/virg...ns-cove-in-va/. The Roanoke River cuts through town and is open for recreational use in various stretches. https://www.roanokeriverblueway.org/...018-proof3.pdf

OP, check out Blacksburg and Christiansburg, 40 minutes SW of Roanoke in the heart of the Blue Ridge. Both towns have Kroger and Christiansburg has an EarthFare, plus farmers markets and smaller specialty organic food stores. Blacksburg is a college town (Virginia Tech U) with some nice downtown shopping as well.

I'd also check out Lexington, Virginia. Not sure the size of city you are looking for, but it has a lot to offer and a really nice historic bustling downtown for a city of its size. Beautiful mountains and hiking opportunities nearby too (check out Natural Bridge State Park).

I will have to visit Blacksburg, it's one of the few places I haven't visited and it keeps coming up. Charlottesville spoiled me with amenities though.

It's the best lake on the east coast. Trust me, we researched it. Clean water, gorgeous, they allow permanent docks, great community and plenty of amenities in the Westlake area. Water is warm. Great boating and sailing opportunities, excellent fishing, and It's an A+.

I've lived in Charlottesville and at Smith Mountain Lake. Charlottesville is lovely but so is Roanoke. Cville is driven by the University, while Roanoke is more diverse in it's interests and amenities. Blue Ridge Pkwy runs almost through Roanoke and very near Charlottesville. You should visit both.

Check out Lexington — tons of organic farmers. But downtown markers market all year. Lots of creeks, rovers and a lake nearby. Tons of outdoor hiking and sports. Art galleries and good art community. Great little town.

Cville traffic and home prices are both insane. Good place to visit but we did not want to live there. Now its an easy hour drive away.
