I like the advice on renting closer to cities while we look for a perfect homestead. Have been building a backup list of rental options like this in case we get down to the wire and cannot complete a purchase. Not the worst thing to move and be closer so we can react more quickly to listings AND spend a few seasons locally. Fingers-crossed still on finding a purchase option though

Good to see others are aware of Floyd. I've always wanted to visit.

I think that is a great idea to have some rental properties to consider as a back up plan. Commonly, rental properties aren't as well kept or desirable as the homes for sale you've probably looked at. But a rental is temporary. And it's very true, if the real estate market is fast moving, it is 100% a good idea to be on the ground and locally looking at homes. Doing it from out of state can just add more stress and hassle.

That is wonderful that you’ve put in an offer! I hope everything works out to your liking and the deal is sealed with minimal concern. You’re very welcome and I too have my fingers crossed for you and your family!

That's great news. Thanks for keeping us in the loop and we are rooting for your happy ending. City-Data has its detractors, but it is folks like both of you that keep the rest of us coming back to a site where (mostly - Politics forum excepted) people are kind and helpful.

Ha! We are feverishly getting out of boxes and settling in now.

We ended up in Lexington. Been here since last Thursday. It still feels so unreal coming from the city suburbs to this.

Downtown Lexington looks like a Hallmark movie!

Be sure and try the Southern inn and the Red Hen. (Though note that the Red Hen is on the no-fly list for Trump fans because they turned away Sarah Huckabee Sanders and her party once....no need to discuss it - just so you are aware!)

Congratulations on your move to the Lexington area. I am a fan of relatively-nearby Polyface Farms, which allows the public to come and tour the property whenever they like. https://www.polyfacefarms.com/principles/ I'm guessing you have probably read or heard of the many books on sustainable farming written by the head of Polyface, Joel Salatin. He is a very opinionated writer but an interesting and entertaining one. https://www.eatwild.com/products/virginia.html has a fairly good (though not complete) list of other small scale sustainable farms in Virginia in case you are interested.
