Volkswagen has bet big on their new EV, due to hit the market next year in Europe. They are calling it one of the top-3 most important models in the company's history. Base model pricing is expected to start at the 30K Euros mark.

They have to. Some cities in Europe are trying to ban internal combustion vehicles from their city streets.

Unimpressed.
Doesn't do anything that Chevy Bolt hasn't already done for years.

What is it with all of the crappy spartan interiors in EVs?

Then you can have it.
I'm not driving a spartan crap box to compensate for the inadequacies of EV batteries.

Honda also debuted their urban "Honda E" this summer, also targeted for 2020 sale in Europe. These companies are spending billions on these programs. My perception is that it's driven by their own desire to establish themselves in the market of the future- i.e., it may take several decades, but they envision EVs as a growing market and ICE vehicles as a shrinking market over time... where would you want to invest?

That's nice, but it doesn't address that Rubbermaid interior. Bolt interiors are just like that... not very nice.
I'm sure the Porsche is quite nice, but it ought to be for $150K.

While it's true that not all change in design is for the better, it's equally true that many people, perhaps most, simply don't do well with change - of any kind. It's a problem also for companies - whenever there is change, there is among some employees, confusion, misunderstanding of motives, whining, and resistance. Some people are stimulated by change, others see it as a threat, a discomfort. But whether we like it or not, change happens.
