VW has now bought a stake in Chinese EV maker Xpeng, and will develop two new EVs based on the Xpeng platform.

VW's Audi division recently closed a deal with Chinese EV maker SAIC to build EVs based on the new SAIC platform.

And last fall, VW took a controlling stake in Chinese tech firm Horizon Robotics, primarily for their automotive software.

One well-known EV commenter just observed "Volkswagen is now more Chinese than they are German!" That's not true for their ICE vehicle operations, but for EVs, yes, it's true. Volkswagen is buying Chinese technology, Chinese research and development pipeline projects, because their own internal efforts in that space have not been cutting it.

"While a Volkswagen ID.3 takes an average of 30 hours to build (for the entire process), a Tesla Model Y is completed within only 10 hours." That kind of deficit is prohibitive.

The ID.3 has better build quality, so Tesla should have added more time to perfect panel gaps, paint defects, etc.

You can put a quarter in some of the panel gaps on some Teslas. Yikes. That kind of build quality used to be unacceptable, but people looked the other way...

And still VW's hunger for Chinese technology is not sated.... "Volkswagen has lost ground in China, a market it once dominated. The German automaker was surpassed by China’s largest EV maker BYD in passenger car sales in the first three months of the year, extending its lead through July.

As the report notes, Volkswagen is not only lagging behind rivals like BYD and Tesla, but up-and-coming EV makers like NIO, XPeng, and Li Auto are also gaining market share, in many cases, in the same segments as VW.

If the [new] deal with Leapmotor goes through, Volkswagen will rely heavily on Chinese tech to carry sales in its most important market."

At a certain point, investors should be asking why the Volkswagen group is paying so much for R&D staff when they aren't using what they come up with anymore? This would mark the 4th Chinese platform that Volkswagen group has bought into in just one year's time!

Germany has always been a country that on the outside supports all the progressive agendas but in reality just keep exploiting under table deals and money printing to offset longterm problems. They keep saying they will ban gas cars yet they are not selling enough while there is a huge economic transition away from ICE it's not simple. Batteries are very expensive and sourcing them from China while the EU trying to hit China with more tariffs.
