Volkswagen has developed a new rear-drive electric motor for the larger models in its ID.x series - the ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7. Dubbed the APP550, the new rear motor offers 40% more horsepower and 75% more torque than the outgoing rear motor on the ID.4.

The APP550 is also more efficient and so will help to deliver a bump in vehicle range for the ID.4 as well. According to the EPA numbers, the rear wheel drive only model - which therefore gets the biggest change, increases from 275mi to 291mi rated range. That's not a huge increase, but it helps, and that's with the same battery and much more available power, so very cool, all in all.

Kudos to Volkswagen - their first generation ID.4 powertrain was a little underwhelming in its performance parameters, but this is a big step forward.
