But of course Harlem offers a lot more than Ward 7 or 8 does, especially when it comes to public transit and urban living. Harlem has like 8 subway lines going through it with like 30 stations. There are only 5 or 6 stations East of the River city proper. A lot of that part of town is suburban and lacks retail/entertainment among other things. It'll take decades for that part of DC to be gentrified and even then it won't be a U street or Columbia Heights.... it just isn't walkable like that.

You can definitely make here off $55k especially since your debt is so low. I was making about $35k when I first moved here a few years ago and the rental market was just as expensive and probably more expensive back then. I had a room mate split a 2bd where I paid $700 a month and I was able to save money and had money to shop and go out. A lot of people are renting out their condo's and homes because the housing market is so bad also, so don't just look at renting apartments.

Hey man,
I moved here a few months back with a budget of 1900/month net. I am a full time student with decent savings that I am using to finish school. I found a place in Alexandria for $750 as my half of rent. $55K is more than enough to live down here if you have that much disposable income. Just mind your budget, and you will be fine! Enjoy DC, its s great area
