The thread title may be an oxymoron, but what's the most affordable neighborhoods in the DC Metro area that are:

walkable to a metro station
close to bars, retaraunts, yada yada

Is there any cost advantage of living in either Maryland, Virginia or the District?

Well near Naylor Rd is the Legend nightclub you can get a drink there. If you can do without bars anywhere on the Green Line south of Navy Yard should be relatively affordable.

The area around Gallaudet University isn't too far from the NY Ave. or Union Station metro and the H Street restaurant and bar corridor. The rents are real cheap around there because it is also close to Trinidad, a real crime ridden part of the city.
