Wellington certainly has an environment much more evolved to year round growth, so I would say it has a more subtropical environment.

Wellington vs Atlanta?

As predicted, we are now one step closer to Invercargill vs Tampa.

Wellington is an cool temperate, maritime Tasmanian style climate by my standards.
Yes, Atlanta gets a touch up from the continental climate in winter, but it’s overall subtropical.

For temperature the USA West Coast (coastal fringe of California) is a better fit with the North Island of NZ. Eastern USA has a lot of continental influence in the climate.

Atlanta has four seasons. Winter can get freezing at times but summer is always hot. Spring starts early and Autumn can stretch into December.

Wellington only has two seasons, cool and cold.

If you live in Atlanta, you ought to own a good winter jacket, but you'll probably only use it a few times a year.

If you live in Wellington, you ought to own a pair of shorts, but you'll probably only use it a few times a year.

My climate is colder than Wellington by annual mean, but shorts are standard for me most of the year.

Cool/cold are only relative terms in this context, and their use is meaningless. As an example, if tomatoes grow in the summer in wellington, would it be correct to say that tomatoes grow when the conditions become cool?

Don’t think these two climates are comparable. Wellington to Sam Francisco or Atlanta to Buenos Aires would be a better comparison.

Atlanta is the quintessential subtropical climate, with mild winters and hot summers. Wellington is a mild-year-round climate, indicating that it is Oceanic.

Atlanta is not a “winter jacket” climate. Atlanta doesn’t have four seasons either. Massachusetts has 4 seasons.
