I really have a strong interest in working for a particular company in my field and just curious to know how someone actually accomplished that goal.

So you work for another company in the same field as the company you want to work for?

I watched their web site and when there was an opening in my field, I applied, got an interview, and got the job.

I got a job with another company I wanted to work for through an inside connection who was in my social circle.

That's the thing, the only way you can get a job at this place is from inside connection. Even though they list openings on their website, they are not real openings

You seem to be so against networking, well, if you want the job, you'd better change your way of thinking.

I'll bet that I could meet someone at that company within the next week by utilizing my extended network.

Then start working on getting that inside connection.

Do you know anyone that works there. If not, do you know anyone that knows someone that works there. Can you get your foot in the door by taking a different position that does not require an inside connection and then work you way into the position you desire. Does your current employer use any of the same vendors or outside agencies the other company uses. Are there any organizations you can join that may have members from that company. Somewhere there is someone that can get you on the inside. It all depends on how hard you are willing to work to make it happen. If it is really a job you want and you are not able to get your inside connection before the position is filled, don't stop working on developing that inside connection. Whoever they hire might not work out and the job will once again be listed.

About a year before I hired on with my current employer they had an opening. By the time I found out about it, someone else had already snagged the internal reference from the one person that had the most pull on who got the job. Rather than give up I continued to work on developing an inside connection. Sure enough, a couple months later the person they hired made a huge mistake and was on the fast track out of there.

One last point. Be sure you have the skills and desire to do the job. That includes being willing to go the extra mile or miles when the job requires it. Whoever you got to be your inside connection has put their reputation at stake for you. Down the road you may need them again.

I got my job from an inside person and I am being asked to refer people for an opening at my company. All about who you know and your reputation in the industry.

I know the senior director of the company, she is one of my connections on my Linkedin Page.
