I say, smile!
I think it makes a person look more warm, inviting, approachable, etc.
Sometimes when people don't smile, their pictures look like mugshots. Literally, they do. If you decide not to smile, definitely try to stay away from the mugshot look.

There's nothing at all wrong with a man smiling in a professional head shot.

Just don't do anything like this:

Smile and remember that it's LinkedIn and not Tinder, so no selfies and preferably a professional-ish looking headshot in work appropriate clothing. I'm an executive recruiter and I cringe when I see many profile pictures that me just right to post on Facebook, but aren't appropriate for a professional setting (and I recruit almost exclusively for health care executives and professionals). Bear in mind that future and current employers, colleagues and clients can and will see your LI profile-- post accordingly!

A natural, moderate smile in a professional-looking headshot (even if a buddy takes the photo).

If it involves your cell phone and a bathroom mirror, don't put it on LinkedIn. If you have to use your cell phone, pick a good backdrop and use the camera's timer option.
