Sorry to be blunt:
Your position is the manager- from the word” manage” - and you are doing it poorly and creating or allowing to fester this toxic situation on your team.
A few observations which struck me regarding your post:
You started with the age of “ participant’s” .This could be construed as “ ageism” by some.
Second, your emphasis on gender. This could be considered as “ sexism” by some.
The two had nothing to do with the situation.
The same could have happened in a group of the same age, the same gender employees.
The third, why would you as a manager allow this situation to fester for 2 years?
If I was in your shoes- I would seek to undergo an additional training.
You could be excellent in what you do and thus became/ was promoted but you are seriously under-performing as a manager. Even the language you are using describing this situation gives you away as incompetent in managing people.
If I would be your boss and become aware of this situation I would probably tend to fire you...from a management position
The OP and his 2 employees are responsible for this mess.
