Conflict of interest. Sometimes .

If your a bank loan officer and on weekend your a bank robber...best tell them I suppose. That might be a conflict of interest all though to the loan officer it's quite the interest to have.

My very first job out of college with CBS had this same stipulation.

No side jobs.

I know a few guys who were pro wrestlers on the side. Some even would get get TV gigs on WWF and the old WCW TV where they would lose to someone like the Undertaker. Ultimately, they wanted to make a living in wrestling and eventually they did for a while, but there was a period where they worked a 9-5 office job and then wrestled mostly on weekends. No one cared. As a matter of fact the bosses loved it.

The state job that I was offered requires employees to complete a supplementary Employment Request form and submit it to HR if they have a side job.

I have heard of outside sales reps working for two companies and using the which paid the highest commission for any particular sale. Also, agree with other posters about companies wanting to if you also on another payroll which could be conflict of interest, especially in places like the Silicon Valley.

Every job I had since 2002 has never required me to report side employment.
Every job I've had since 1994 has required it. I've worked for a few that were dicks about it, but most have been fine provided there wasn't a conflict of interest.

I have been working professionally for 30+ years and have seen this requirement at most companies I have worked for. Ethical conflicts are the main issue.

Usually, it is no big deal. You tell HR and they say it is ok.

However, I have been turned down recently, when a previous job in the same industry wanted me to come back and help out. Both companies service some of the same customers.

In this last case, my current company did offer an "appeal" if I felt strongly that there would be no conflict. I would have to supply a written statement describing what kind of work and customer interactions I would have. In my situation, I decided not to bother. I called my previous employer and declined.
