Let me know of your experience(s) if you have personally been a franchisee. Pros/cons/wouldda/shouldda/coulddas.

I don't want replies from people who Google "franchising" with tales of riches or bankruptcies, looking specifically for people who have made the leap, invested and are or have previously ran a franchise.

Note: this is NOT MLM.

See the recent thread on Subway franchising. Much useful discussion about more than just the woeful Subway.

The summary seems to be that franchising is a crutch; if you're going to succeed, you can succeed better as an independent than by hobbling along under franchise limitations and costs. If you're going to fail, you'll do it either way.

Also that core competence is not optional. Being handed the keys to a franchise when you have nothing but the money, the whim and some general business experience is a recipe for failure. The weekend training course in Dallas will not make you a successful franchisee.

So many variables with locale, industry, etc.
