Our company (and others before it) give these titles out to impress customers. Are they experts? Almost to a person, no.

Exactly, it has more to do with the pay band of the employee. At my company, I am the Lead Release Engineer. We also have a Principal Cloud Architect. We don't have any direct reports, but are paid more than those with the "associate, senior, junior" job titles.
