Who would have thought that Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan had such low homicide rates. I think its just something from the last couple years, Sierra Leone and Liberia were in the top 5 worst countries in the world to live in during the 1990's thanks to civil wars that killed around half million people.
I would suspect that high inequality fuels homicide rates.
I know a lot of the countries in the bottom list can have filthy rich people living in mansions/condo towers immediately next to slums/ghettoes. Could be jealousy and man's natural urge to be at the top of the food chain.
And I always thought Botswana was very safe...maybe that's just compared to South Africa.

Have in mind African countries aren't exactly very good at reporting crime, and other statistics!

True but if it says 1.9 for Sierra Leone and 3.2 for Liberia i don't think the homicide rate will be much higher than double those numbers, which is still relatively low at 3.8 and 6.4.
I remember my friend visited Sierra leone for her work and they warned her to not go out as she was white and she could get rapped or stabbed while getting robbed.
The only time she went out was with guards paid by her job (and its not like she was on a serious job position, she was just translating)
I don't know why, but I get the feeling crime in many african countries is seriously underreported.
