Most of it is boring and gives me little reason to care. Especially "based on a true story fiction", which most of it is. I'd much prefer to read the true story. And even more especially novels that run well beyond 200 pages. Really? Who cares? People revere novelists like they are almost gods. Me, why should I care enough to read more than 20 pages about made up people? About the only fiction i like other than short stories is either weird enough to keep my attention, or is entertaining. All of my favorite writers wrote nonfiction and novels and without exception their nonfiction is superior.

I am a fiction writer, published several short fiction, and a novel. But i dont like to read fiction. Only read them for assignments and class work for my MFA. I read a lot, all non-fiction. If i ever decide to write again for publishing, it will be non-fiction.

I like to balance out my reading. I like a mix of fiction and nonfiction.

I think fiction may be more fun to write than it is to read. Or so I hear. I can't write fiction so I wouldn't know.

What do you do with your MFA, teach?

I got the MFA as a credential for publishing and submitting. It turned out to be a much richer experience than I imagined and my writing expanded. Also the networking was useful. I think it requires a Ph.D to do any serious teaching. Or serious publishing
I agree fiction is fun to write but it is hard work, as any serious writing is.

Gosh, you sound just like my dad, OP. He was a voracious reader of mostly history, never fiction. Like you, he couldn't understand why anyone would read about "made up" characters and events. He considered it an utter waste of time.

I prefer reading nonfiction, but I do really enjoy a good novel. The problem is that it's hard to find a good novel. Most, like most movies, are pretty ho-hum, imo.

Having said that, I have great admiration for any writers of any decent published work, nonfiction or fiction.

There is a lot of bad fiction out there, particularly since the self-publishing industry removed any barrier to entry. You might try reading some Pulitzer Prize or National Book Award winners before painting all fiction with the same overly broad brush (and as an added bonus, reading top-tier material will improve your own writing skills no matter what your chosen genre).

I've read a lot of incredibly absorbing, interesting fiction. What's the actual point of this thread?

I recently met someone who disparaged my love of fiction. She then recounted (in excruciating detail) the dramatic true story of somebody or other. There's a lid for every pot.

Fiction is underrated, and in fact supplies much of my escapism.

I don't care much for the real world. To that and, movies, music, TV and books provide common escapes from the pain and stench of the real world. Fiction books are a big part of my escapism.
